MycoTOX Profile® – Comprehensive Mycotoxin Urine Test

Investigate Potential Mould & Mycotoxin Exposure

The MycoTOX Profile® is a comprehensive, urine-based laboratory test designed to measure 11 selected mycotoxins and mycotoxin metabolites associated with multiple species of mould.

Mycotoxins are compounds produced by certain fungi and moulds. Potential sources include damp or water-damaged buildings, indoor environments, vehicles and certain foods.

Using a simple urine sample collected at home, the MycoTOX Profile® provides laboratory information that can be considered alongside your environmental history, dietary factors, symptoms and other relevant information.

At-home urine collection • 11 mycotoxin markers • LC-MS/MS analysis • Laboratory report

Why Test for Mycotoxins?

Mould exposure isn’t always obvious. Mould can develop in damp or water-damaged environments and may be hidden behind walls, beneath flooring or within other building materials.

Mycotoxins can have both environmental and dietary sources. Potential exposure may occur in homes, workplaces, vehicles and through certain foods.

Symptoms associated with environmental exposures can be varied and non-specific. If you have concerns about potential mould or mycotoxin exposure, laboratory testing may provide additional information to discuss with a qualified healthcare professional.

The MycoTOX Profile® is designed to provide a comprehensive assessment of selected mycotoxin markers in urine.

What Is the MycoTOX Profile®?

The MycoTOX Profile® is Mosaic Diagnostics’ comprehensive urine-based mycotoxin assessment.

The test uses LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry) to analyse selected mycotoxin markers at very low concentrations.

The profile measures 11 mycotoxins and mycotoxin metabolites, including markers associated with mould genera such as:

  • Aspergillus

  • Penicillium

  • Stachybotrys

  • Fusarium

  • Chaetomium globosum

What Does the MycoTOX Profile® Test?

The MycoTOX Profile® measures 11 selected mycotoxin markers.

Aflatoxins

  • Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1)

Ochratoxins

  • Ochratoxin A (OTA)

Trichothecenes

  • Roridin E (ROE)

  • Verrucarin A (VRA)

Other Mycotoxin Markers

  • Zearalenone

  • Chaetoglobosin (CHA)

  • Enniatin B (ENB)

  • Gliotoxin (GTX)

  • Mycophenolic Acid (MPA)

  • Sterigmatocystin (STC)

  • Citrinin (CTN)

These markers are associated with multiple mould and fungal species, providing a broad profile rather than testing for a single mycotoxin.

How Can You Be Exposed to Mycotoxins?

Mycotoxins can have a variety of potential environmental and dietary sources.

Environmental Exposure

Potential exposure may occur in buildings or other environments affected by moisture or water damage.

Mould can grow on or within materials such as:

  • Plasterboard and drywall

  • Wallpaper

  • Carpets and flooring

  • Insulation

  • Furniture

  • Other porous building materials

Mould can also occur in vehicles and other enclosed environments where moisture has accumulated.

Dietary Exposure

Certain mycotoxins can occur naturally in contaminated agricultural products and foods.

Potential dietary sources may include:

  • Grains

  • Nuts

  • Dried fruit

  • Spices

  • Coffee

  • Other food products

The potential for dietary exposure varies according to the particular mycotoxin, food, geographic region and food-safety controls.

Who Might Consider MycoTOX Testing?

The MycoTOX Profile® may be considered if you have concerns about potential mould or mycotoxin exposure, particularly if you have a history of living or working in a damp, musty or water-damaged environment.

You may wish to discuss testing with your healthcare professional if you have:

  • A history of living or working in a water-damaged building

  • Known or suspected indoor mould exposure

  • Potential occupational exposure to mould

  • Concerns about mould in your home, workplace or vehicle

  • Potential dietary exposure to mycotoxins

  • Ongoing symptoms where environmental exposure is part of your history

People investigating possible environmental exposure may experience a wide variety of symptoms, including fatigue, headaches, sinus or respiratory symptoms, digestive concerns, cognitive difficulties and skin concerns.

However, these symptoms are non-specific and can have many possible causes. Symptoms alone do not establish mycotoxin exposure.

How Does the MycoTOX Profile® Work?

The MycoTOX Profile® uses LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry) to analyse selected mycotoxin markers in urine.

LC-MS/MS is a highly specific laboratory analytical technique capable of measuring compounds at very low concentrations.

The test also incorporates creatinine correction to account for differences in urine concentration between samples.

Things to Note Before Testing

Please read the following information carefully before collecting your sample.

First Morning Urine

Your sample should be collected from your first urine of the morning.

Postage & Packaging

Our fees include postage and packaging to and from the client and the processing laboratory.

Printer Required

You will need access to a printer to print the laboratory shipping label supplied with your test.

Frozen Sample

The laboratory must receive the sample frozen.

For this reason, Human Defences sends samples to Mosaic Diagnostics on Mondays and Tuesdays only. We can receive completed test kits and samples on other days, but samples will be held for the appropriate shipping day.

Food, Medication & Supplements

Certain foods, medications and supplements may need to be avoided for up to 3 days before sample collection.

Full preparation instructions will be provided before your test kit is sent.

Do not discontinue any prescribed medication, essential treatment or supplements without first consulting your healthcare practitioner.

After Antibiotics

Please wait at least 48 hours after completing a course of antibiotics before collecting your sample.

Understanding Your Results

Your MycoTOX Profile® report provides laboratory measurements for the selected mycotoxin markers included in the test.

Results can provide additional information when investigating potential environmental or dietary exposure and can be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.

A urinary mycotoxin result does not by itself establish:

  • Where exposure occurred

  • When exposure occurred

  • Whether exposure came from food or the environment

  • Whether a particular symptom or medical condition was caused by a mycotoxin

If you are concerned about mould contamination in your home or workplace, environmental assessment is a separate consideration.

Your MycoTOX Report

Your report will be sent to you by email once your laboratory results are available.

We recommend discussing your results with a qualified healthcare professional who can consider your individual medical history, symptoms, environmental history and other relevant factors.

Important Information

Human Defences does not provide test interpretation, medical advice or clinical guidance.

For the most appropriate advice, we strongly recommend discussing your results with a qualified healthcare professional. They can consider your individual medical history and circumstances when interpreting your results and advising you on any appropriate next steps.

Your test results should not be used as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
